After it was announced via the club’s official Twitter account that Manchester United have appointed their former striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager, we decided to take a look at which players in particular would benefit the most under the 45-year-old’s tutelage…
A clean slate for everyone
It is no secret that Jose Mourinho had a few differences with some members of his squad at Old Trafford, and he did not hesitate to call them out in public. The Portuguese boss had very well-documented spats with Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba in particular, whilst he was not a huge fan of players such as Anthony Martial and Juan Mata, who definitely should have seen more playing time than they did under him.
He froze £52m summer signing Fred out of the starting line-up, showed strange loyalty to Scott McTominay – who is nowhere near good enough for Manchester United – playing him instead of Andreas Pereira, and let’s not even go into the situation with Alexis Sanchez.
There are so many good players at Old Trafford, but unfortunately, the majority of them were the metaphorical square peg whilst Mourinho’s system only suited round holes. Under Solskjaer, however, a lot will change.
What system does he play and who will that benefit?
Solskjaer became manager of United’s reserves in 2008 and oversaw the development of current players such as Jesse Lingard and Pogba. Back in August, the former Cardiff boss admitted that he would build his side around the Frenchman if he were in charge of the club, so he must now back that statement.
So, that will be the first step. The World Cup winner will undoubtedly benefit most from the change in managers, as too will Romelu Lukaku who will be taught the ways of a penalty-box striker and how to move in the area from arguably one of the best at doing so – if he still performs poorly, a potentially reinvigorated Sanchez will be bought in.
Solskjaer prefers to play an attacking 4-3-3 formation, so there should be a permanent position out on the left-wing for Martial, who is yet to play under an attack-minded manager at United – Louis van Gaal and Mourinho have been in charge throughout the 23-year-old’s time at Old Trafford.
Mata, who is arguably the best passer of the ball at the club and perhaps the most creative, should come into the midfield three alongside Pogba, with either Nemanja Matic or Ander Herrera in behind them. £52m man Fred should also see a lot more gametime and may even start ahead of Matic or Herrera.
Eric Bailly, who was not a favourite under Mourinho to say the least, is the best defender at the club and will most likely be reinstated into the line-up by Solskjaer, who will probably drop the prolific own-goal culprit Phil Jones to the bench.
Olivier Giroud is set for a starring role in the new Spiderman and it’s easy to see why! Check out the video below to find out more…
The biggest worry for any single player at the club should be for Marouane Fellaini. Almost everyone knows that the Belgian was Mourinho’s go-to guy when they were chasing a game and needed someone to lump the ball to in what was a very embarrassing tactic.
However, one simply cannot see how he will fit into Solskjaer’s preferred system of an attacking three-man midfield; it could be lights out for a number of figures who have been riding their luck at United for some time now.
