Following Monday’s televised victory over Crawley Town on Monday night there is rightly an air of optimism around the Greenhous Meadow.
This time last week Shrews supporters were feeling deflated following what many believed to be a very unfair and controversial defeat at the hands of league leaders Swindon.
However coming out of Monday’s arguably undeserved victory over Steve Evans’ men, Town fans are finally beginning to believe we can at long last secure promotion this season.
Tomorrow we make our annual visit to Gresty Road to take on local (ish) rivals Crewe Alexandra. The good news is that Gresty Road has been kind to us over the last few years and in-fact we have emerged victorious on our last three visits there. Consequently Town fans will be feeling quite optimistic going into the encounter.
Our opponents Crewe currently sit in tenth place in the division, only four points outside the play offs and the Crewe faithful will be thinking that the play offs are a genuine target at this stage of the campaign. The Railwaymen come into the game on the back of a 1-1 draw with local rivals Port Vale and will be high on confidence having not lost in their last three games.
Shrewsbury head into Saturday’s game on a wave of momentum following our season-defining victory on Monday night. With 4th place Southend facing a difficult away day at Burton Albion tomorrow we know that a victory could potentially put us four points clear in the automatic promotion zone with a game in-hand over both Southend and second placed Cheltenham.
Whilst tomorrow’s game promises to be a difficult encounter against a Crewe side, whom are in the play-off mix, I think recent history and our recent form would suggest that we should be able to secure an important victory tomorrow and that is exactly what we should be aiming for if we are going to be serious promotion contenders in the final third of the season.
