After spending last season stuck behind a midfielder playing out of position, the end appeared nigh for Alberto Moreno during the summer. Only for the first few weeks of his Liverpool career – most notably the stunning solo goal against Tottenham – had the Spaniard appeared a trustworthy option for the Reds at left-back, so James Milner’s emergence in the role coupled with Andrew Robertson arriving from Hull City this summer looked to kill off any chance of his Anfield tutelage reviving.
But signings can affect teams in more ways than simply improving or reducing the quality of one individual in one position. And while the Scotland international still appears to be Jurgen Klopp’s long-term preference at No.3, there’s no question his presence on Merseyside has inspired Moreno to raise his game – something the Liverpool gaffer appears to have duly noted.
Indeed, Moreno has started all but one of the Reds’ competitive fixtures so far this season and although he’s played a culpable hand in as many Liverpool concedes as any other member of their often shambolic back four, the 25-year-old is clearly throwing everything into keeping the competition Robertson provides at arm’s reach.
Last night’s performance in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla was yet another example; Moreno had the most touches of the ball of any Liverpool player upon facing his former club, created the most chances – including the assist for Roberto Firmino’s equaliser – made the most clearances and interceptions and won the most aerial duels.
The Spain international may still not be a fan favourite at Anfield after a largely underwhelming three years on the books, but he certainly can’t be criticised for the commitment, application and overall form he’s shown so far this season. The £8million spent on Robertson this summer wasn’t just an investment to acquire a new, young and promising left-back, it was also an investment to get the best out of the left-back Liverpool already had.
