There are many reasons for Leeds’ success under Marcelo Bielsa and though much of it is built on their solid foundations at the back, it is their passing style which wins them games.
It can be argued that the team possess such a strong defensive record due to the way they keep the ball away from the opponent, evidenced by their average of 60% possession this term.
There are several players who are key to that, with Kalvin Phillips acting as the anchor, but supporters are applauding those further forward for the contribution they have made.
In particular, Pablo Hernadez is being singled out for his 251 successful passes in the final third, a stat bettered by only six players in the Championship.
Stuart Dallas and Mateusz Klich are also in the top 11 for that stat, with the latter ranking top, but the Spaniard is being highlighted for praise most by fans due to how many matches he has missed this season.
While that is a testament to the 34-year-old’s consistently high performances, for which he is rightly recognised, it is Bielsa who provides the genius behind it all.
It is his style and instructions which allows Leeds to dominate in the fashion they do, and because of that, it is always likely that certain players will perform well in areas such as this.
Klich has been criticised this season yet he provides such a valuable role, and Bielsa knows that – for which one fan labelled his fellow supporters “clueless”.
Virtually impossible: Can you name the year all of these Leeds flops arrived at Elland Road?
That’s why the Poland international is one of the first names on the teamsheet, and if he can grab goals more often as he did against Middlesbrough, then he will surely get the fan recognition he deserves.
Meanwhile, the performances of another player mean he is becoming more and more important to Bielsa too, which again is credit to the manager.
