According to reports in The Sun on Sunday, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s future has been brought into questions with talks over a new contract stalling.
What’s the word, then?
Well, The Sun on Sunday says that Conte was expected to sign new terms after the club won the Premier League title in the Italian’s first season in charge, but he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract.
One of the issues has been whether he will get a four-year deal worth £9.6m-a-year, or a shorter agreement, according to The Sun on Sunday.
The report adds that Conte’s stock is high after such a successful first campaign in England, but there are fears that he is becoming increasingly unhappy with life at Stamford Bridge as he is frustrated at their summer transfer business.
While they have signed Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko, the west London outfit missed out to Manchester United for Romelu Lukaku and AC Milan for Leonardo Bonucci and they still need to sign a new centre-forward.
How well did Conte do last season?
He was quite brilliant.
After a difficult start to the campaign and a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, the Italian changed to a 3-4-3 formation and it proved to be the catalyst to turn their season around and cruise to the Premier League title.
While they missed out on winning in the FA Cup, Conte has led Chelsea back to the group stages of the Champions League and made individuals like Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso key parts of the team.
Will he sign a new deal?
With the new Premier League season less than a month away, it will be interesting to see if a new deal is agreed before then, or if Conte is waiting to see what business they do in the remainder of the transfer window before deciding what he wants to do.
Is there a chance he could go?
Missing out on Lukaku would have been a big blow but Chelsea can still bring in a top centre-forward this summer, and Conte will surely want to try and retain the Premier League title and have a real crack at the Champions League.
