Danny Welbeck’s loan spell at Sunderland looks to be doing just the trick for both Welbeck and Sunderland. He has been in superb from over the last couple of weeks, and he is starting to show why Sir Alex Ferguson has resisted so many bids for the striker. He has shown over the last couple of weeks how versatile he can be, without losing effectiveness. He has played through the middle and looked very dangerous as well as putting in some top level performances from out wide. It is this versatility that is sure to get Manchester United fans excited.
Danny Welbeck is playing under the perfect manager. Steve Bruce knows first hand what it is like to play and succeed under enormous pressures at Manchester United. Danny Welbeck must head the advice given to him – to be patient, work hard and it will come. As much as Steve Bruce may want to keep Welbeck, he will return to Manchester United. Danny Welbeck has to take these lessons on board whilst at Sunderland. Steve Bruce will make him a better player, as well as better prepared mentally for the challenge of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs. If Welbeck is to succeed at Manchester United, Steve Bruce will take a lot of credit.
Over the last couple of months, Manchester United have been linked with a host of players for the transfer window. A worry for Manchester United fans is, do Manchester United have enough going forward? Dimitar Berbatov may have scored eleven goals but he had a long barren spell after his hat trick against Liverpool, while Wayne Rooney is yet to hit top form. Manchester United shouldn’t rush into the transfer market just yet. Welbeck will come back to Manchester United a far better player. All he needed was game time. Everyone at Old Trafford knows how talented the boy is, but he needed minutes on the pitch. This season, Sir Alex Ferguson allowed him to go to a Premier League club, something he has done with the players he thinks most highly. Jonny Evans spent a year at Sunderland, returned and is now challenging for first team football. If Welbeck is given a chance at Manchester United he could be a real hit.
Welbeck has pace and has shown a real eye for goal this term. He has scored five goals from 17 Premier League games this season, not a bad return when you consider he has played wide and Sunderland have shared the goals between Asamoah Gyan, Wellbeck and Darren Bent. Welbeck has also been used as a substitute six times, coming on mainly after the 60 minute mark. If we look at in my opinion the Premier League’s best striker, Didier Drogba, and compare his statistics with Welbeck – we see something even more impressive. This season, on average, Drogba has had to wait 228 minutes per goal. Danny Welbeck has had to wait only 234 minutes per goal. This is a highly impressive record and shows furthermore the strides the young striker is making this season.
While the transfer market remains in chaos because of big spenders and clubs putting their players on ridiculously long contracts, Manchester United need to look within. Bringing through young players is exactly what the club has been all about. Welbeck has shown this season that he has a bright future, but let’s make that future at Old Trafford.
When the striker returns, Welbeck will fit into the 4-3-3 formation that Manchester United play perfectly. He has had experience of playing it, and has flourished. Of course there is a danger that he may not cut it at Manchester United. However, let’s all hope he is given the chance. Having faith in a young player can lead to great things, just look at Jack Wilshere at Arsenal. If you’re good enough, you are old enough. Danny Welbeck is showing that he may be more than good enough.
